The School of Resources, Environment and Materials was established in June 2017 by merging three existing schools: the School of Resources and Metallurgy, the School of Environment, and the School of Materials Science and Engineering. This was done to promote the development of “Double First-Class” disciplines and strengthen cross-disciplinary studies. In November of the same year, the Wood Science and Engineering major from the School of Forestry was also incorporated into the new school. Currently, the School of Resources, Environment and Materials has three first-level disciplines and five undergraduate majors.

Guangxi is rich in natural resources and boasts talented people and beautiful scenery. The school, guided by the educational tenet of “safeguarding China and developing Guangxi” and the school motto of “diligence, honesty, learning, and innovation”, inherits the aspirations and traditions of its predecessors and has been committed to cultivating first-class professionals for the development of the country and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region.

The school has a long history dating back to 1928 when a group of renowned domestic scholars such as Ma Junwu, Li Siguang, He Jie, Cai Chengyun, Zheng Jianxuan, and Wang Zhanxin taught related professional subjects and conducted scientific research at Guangxi University, laying the foundation for the development of the school’s disciplines and cultivating a large number of professional and technical personnel for the country and Guangxi. Today, the school has developed into a teaching and research institution that integrates undergraduate and graduate education. Through the joint efforts of all faculty members, the Materials Science discipline entered the top 1% of ESI disciplines globally in 2015, and the Environmental/Ecology discipline entered the top 1% of ESI disciplines globally in 2021.

The school currently has 167 staff members, including 125 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 39 professors and other senior professors as well as 34 associate professors and other associate senior professors. The school has 117 faculty members with doctoral degrees, 26 doctoral supervisors, and 119 master’s supervisors. There are also 19 high-level talents in various fields. The school has a total of 3,056 full-time students, including 1,953 undergraduate students and 1,103 graduate students.

Currently, the school has five undergraduate majors: Mineral Resource Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Wood Science and Engineering. There are 3 master’s degree programs in the first-level disciplines of Mining Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. There are 2 professional master’s degree programs in Materials and Chemical Engineering (Materials Engineering, Forestry Engineering) and Resources and Environment (Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering). The Materials Science and Engineering discipline is a first-class discipline construction project in Guangxi, and in the final evaluation of the first round of first-class discipline construction in Guangxi in July 2021, it received an “A” grade. The majors of Materials Science and Engineering, Mineral Resource Engineering, Wood Science and Engineering, and Environmental Engineering in our school are all national first-class specialty development sites. Materials Forming and Control Engineering is a first-class undergraduate specialty development site in Guangxi. Mineral Resource Engineering and Wood Science and Engineering are national characteristic specialty majors. Materials Science and Engineering and Wood Science and Engineering are national comprehensive reform pilot specialty majors. The majors of Environmental Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering are both selected in the “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program” of the Ministry of Education.

The school emphasizes scientific research, integrates research with education, cultivates talents, and has established a number of high-end scientific research and teaching platforms and technology application platforms. These include: One national key laboratory co-built by the province and the ministry, one key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, two Guangxi key research platforms, two Guangxi innovation centers, three Guangxi key university laboratories, as well as a number of other research institutions.
