The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture at Guangxi University has a rich history dating back to 1928, when it established its first preparatory class. In 1932, it officially became the Department of Civil Engineering, marking it the university's first engineering department. In 1997, it evolved into the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture. Over the years, the School has been under the leadership of 14 Heads of Department and 5 Deans.

Faculty and Students

Currently, the School boasts a faculty of 174 members, including 143 full-time teachers. Among them are 33 doctoral supervisors, with 43 professors, and 45 associate professors. Additionally, the faculty includes 1 full-time and 1 part-time academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as 10 other national-level talents. Among them are 7 recipients of the Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award, 1 recipient of the National Xu Zhilun Mechanics Excellent Teacher Award, 1 participant in the Young Elite Science Sponsorship Program by the China Association for Science and Technology, and 11 provincial-level talents.

The School currently has 2083 undergraduate students and 1202 doctoral and master’s students. It consists of six departments: the Department of Architectural Engineering, the Department of Road and Bridge Engineering, the Department of Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, the Department of Architectural Planning, the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, and the Department of Engineering Mechanics. It is also home to the National Demonstration Center of Civil Engineering Experiment Teaching.

Achievements and Recognition

In 1997, structural engineering was designated as one of the national key construction disciplines under the “211 Project”. In 2002, it was recognized as one of seven structural engineering disciplines nationwide selected as a national key discipline. The School is home to several prominent research and support platforms, including the National Demonstration Center for Civil Engineering Experiment Teaching, the Key Laboratory of Engineering Disaster Prevention and Structural Safety under the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center for Large-Span Arch Bridge Key Technology under the Ministry of Education, the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Engineering Safety, the Guangxi Engineering Technology Research Center for Special Geological Highway Safety, the Engineering Research Center for Water Safety and Intelligent Regulation in Karst Areas of Guangxi, the Guangxi Engineering Disaster Prevention and Structural Safety Talent Highland, and the Large-Span Arch Bridge Key Technology Talent Highland. These platforms provide substantial support for the School’s research and development activities.

In 2017, under the leadership of Academician Zheng Jielian, the School’s Civil Engineering discipline was recognized as the only discipline in Guangxi selected for the "World First-class Discipline" list. Additionally, in 2022, the State Key Laboratory of Processing for Non-ferrous Metals and Featured Materials, a joint construction by Guangxi University and the Ministry of Education, received approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2023, Guangxi University was included in the “Higher Education Institutions Discipline Innovation and Telent Introduction Program” for Civil Engineering.

Academic Programs

The School has established a comprehensive talent cultivation system that spans  undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, post-doctoral, and adult education programs. This includes a postdoctoral research station in Civil Engineering, doctoral programs in Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering, and a master’s program in Architecture. At the undergraduate level, the School offers majors in Civil Engineering (including Architectural Engineering, Road and Bridge Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, etc.), Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, and Architecture. The former two have been designated as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, while Architecture holds first-class status in Guangxi.

The School’s Civil Engineering major has received consecutive certifications in the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development’s Institutions of Higher Education Civil Engineering Major Evaluation in 2006, 2011, and 2016. Additionally, the Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering major has been recognized as a National Characteristic Major with Engineering Education Certification since 2021.

Alumni and Contributions

Since its establishment, the School has nurtured over 13,400 graduates in different fields, including Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a national master of engineering survey and design, professors at prestigious universities, and numerous experts and scholars in Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, and Architectural Planning. These alumni have made significant contributions to their respective disciplines, reflecting the School's commitment to nurturing exceptional talent and promoting educational excellence.

The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture is dedicated to advancing academic excellence, fostering innovative research, and developing skilled professionals who contribute to the development of society and the engineering industry.
