Guangxi University Welcomes 2024 Freshmen with "First Class" Lecture

On September 2nd, Guangxi University hosted its "First Class" lecture for the 2024 incoming students at the West Campus gymnasium. Li Guozhong, Secretary of the CPC GXU committee, gave a speech to the undergraduate cohort titled "Youth at GXU: Now is the Time to Strive." Han Linhai, Deputy Secretary of the CPC GXU committee and President of GXU, delivered a lecture to the new graduate students titled "Rooted in Fertile Guangxi Soil, Shaping Outstanding Scholars." The event was chaired by Vice President Feng Jiaxun.

 

Li Guozhong first extended a warm welcome on behalf of the university to the 2024 batch of undergraduate freshmen from across the country. He then led the students to have a review of Guangxi University's 96-year history, highlighting the legacy of its first president Ma Junwu and notable figures like Chen Wangdao, Chen Yinque, and Li Da, who once taught at GXU. Through these figures, he explored the spirit of Guangxi University, encouraging students to carry it on and fulfill their responsibilities.

He discussed the universitys status from ten aspects: Educational positioning, unique features, faculty teams, teaching and education, research platforms, landmark achievements, logistical support, sports facilities, student development outcomes, and plans and vision. Li aimed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the university and the responsibilities they carry as GXU students.

 

Li Guozhong encouraged students to always uphold a spirit of perseverance. He shared the story of GXU alumnus Liang Guocong, known as the "Panda Hero" for his life-saving blood donations, to inspire them to cultivate noble character. He highlighted Wei Naiwen, chief designer of the submarine missile launch system and GXU alumnus, as an example of academic dedication, and referenced Academicians Zheng Jielian and Wang Shuangfei to encourage bold innovation among the freshmen.

In his conclusion, Li called on students to fully embrace their role as GXU students and take on the responsibilities of their generation, aiming to become youth of China in the new era with ideals, a sense of duty, resilience, and a strong work ethic.

 

Han Linhai introduced the new graduate students to Guangxi University by outlining its history, current status, and educational philosophy. He detailed the universitys development through five phases: Its founding in Wuzhou, expansion in Guilin, revival in Nanning, progress through reforms, and recent advancements. He provided a thorough overview of the universitys current state, including its educational focus, distinctive features, faculty teams, doctoral programs, research platforms, and notable achievements. He then discussed the universitys graduate education philosophy, highlighting principles and goals, teaching methods, support systems, and future plans.

   Han Linhai highlighted exemplary faculty members, including Zheng Jielian, Wang Shuangfei, Chen Baoshan, Yu Kefu, and Xie Fei.He evoked them to encourage students to explore new ideas, maintain rigor and practicality, drive innovation, collaborate effectively, and contribute to society. In his closing remarks, Dr. Han offered practical advice for their graduate studies: Ask insightful questions, build a solid knowledge base while broadening expertise, engage in hands-on experience to enhance problem-solving skills, connect with research mentors, use effective methodologies, and participate actively in research projects to develop problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
