On June 5, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the fifth Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Honorary President for Life of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in Guangxi, visited Guangxi University. She was accompanied by Mr. Zhou Tong, Deputy Director of the Office of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The delegation was warmly received by Mr. Wang Naixue, Vice Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Political Consultative Conference and Party Secretary of GXU, along with Mr. Han Linhai, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of GXU, and Mr. Xiao Jianzhuang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President GXU.

Mr. Wang Naixue welcomed Carrie Lam and provided a brief introduction to GXU’s educational and developmental achievements, as well as the history of its exchanges and collaborations with Hong Kong universities. He stated that GXU, as the only “Double First-Class” university in Guangxi, is deeply rooted in the region and dedicated to cultivating outstanding talents and promoting coordinated scientific research. The university aligns its efforts with national development strategies and the socioeconomic progress of Guangxi, resulting in numerous innovative accomplishments. Guangxi University maintains strong ties with Hong Kong universities, engaging in extensive academic exchanges, research collaborations, and student training programs. Notably, in May of this year, Guangxi University signed a memorandum of understanding with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to establish a joint doctoral and postdoctoral training program in civil engineering. Mr. Wang expressed his hope that Mrs. Carrie Lam would facilitate further cooperation between Guangxi University and other Hong Kong institutions. He also invited more high-caliber talents from Hong Kong to work in Guangxi and encouraged more Hong Kong students to study at Guangxi University.

Mrs. Carrie Lam shared her insights on Hong Kong’s development, noting the region’s abundant high-quality higher education resources and the strong global rankings of its universities. She highlighted the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s commitment to fostering innovation and technology, attracting research talents from around the world. Given the geographical and cultural proximity between Guangxi and Hong Kong, she expressed her willingness to support GXU and encouraged increased communication and collaboration between universities in both regions in areas such as basic research, academic exchanges, talent cultivation, and youth innovation and entrepreneurship.

Following the meeting, Mrs. Carrie Lam delivered an engaging lecture titled “Adhering to and Improving the Practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in Hong Kong.” Drawing from her extensive experience, she discussed Hong Kong’s history, the process of its return to China, the implementation and achievements of “One Country, Two Systems,” and underscored the importance of its comprehensive and accurate application for maintaining Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability. She also detailed various talent initiatives launched by Hongkong, the experiences of mainland students in Hong Kong, and the city’s need for skilled professionals. Mrs. Carrie Lam expressed optimism about closer future exchanges between young people from Guangxi and Hong Kong, and she warmly invited more students from Guangxi University to study and intern in Hong Kong. The lecture was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. As a gesture of gratitude, student representatives presented Mrs. Carrie Lam with flowers.
