Modification of Wood Fibers and Its Application in Remediation of Heavy Metal Pollution

Project: Modification of Wood Fibers and Its Application in Remediation of Heavy Metal Pollution

Introduction: Wood fiber is a rich renewable resource on earth. China produces a large amount of agricultural and forestry waste such as straw every year, but the current effective utilization rate is less than 40%. Guangxi has abundant biodiversity and forest coverage rate, ranking at the forefront in China. Agricultural and forestry wastes, such as eucalyptus bark and bagasse, are more abundant with a total annual amount of 120 million tons. Agricultural and forestry waste contains abundant woody fibers, and the extraction or transformation of woody fibers from them has become an important direction and key area for the utilization of agricultural and forestry waste. This can turn waste into treasure and is of great significance for China's strategy of "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality". The project uses agricultural and forestry waste in Guangxi as raw materials, and develops a new and economical technology for converting wood fibers rapidly in one step. It has also developed wood-cellulose-fiber-based functional materials for the adsorption of multiple heavy metal ions, and developed supporting technology and equipment to achieve the simultaneous, rapid, and efficient removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The project ensures the long-term passivation and stabilization of heavy metals in polluted soil. It has effectively promoted the high-value utilization of wood fiber resources and demonstrated the green management and remediation of heavy metal pollution.

The project has obtained 60 relevant patents, including 30 patents for invention and 30 patents for utility model, and has developed 2 local standards in Guangxi. Over 100 academic papers have been published, including 50 papers indexed by SCI. The project has been listed in 2 items of the National Key Practical Technologies for Environmental Protection, and 1 item in the Green "Belt and Road" Technology Reserve.
