School of Mechanical Engineering, Guangxi University was formerly the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Guangxi University founded in 1933. In 1997, the school merged with the Department of Agricultural Engineering of Guangxi Agricultural University and then become one of the largest engineering schools in Guangxi University. The school was approved to set up one of the first national master degree programs of Second-level Disciplines in Mechanical Manufacturing in 1981, and the doctoral degree program of First-level Discipline in Mechanical Engineering in 2018.

The school offers comprehensive education programs covering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. Now the school has the first-level discipline doctoral degree program in Mechanical Engineering, including five research directions: Mechanical Manufacture and Automation, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory, Vehicle Engineering, Micro Nano Engineering. The school also has a first-level discipline master degree program in Mechanical Engineering, 2 professional master’s degree programs in Mechanical Engineering and Power Engineering, 4 undergraduate programs in Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Mechatronic Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Vehicle Engineering. Among them, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation is one of the national first-class undergraduate majors and national featured majors. It has passed the professional certification from China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. Energy and Power Engineering is the national first-class undergraduate major and the pilot program of National Education and Cultivation Program for Talented Engineers. Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Vehicle Engineering are both first-class undergraduate programs in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. At present, the school has been recognized with 1 national first-class course and 3 provincial first-class courses, and has won 2 special awards and 4 first prizes of teaching achievements in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Among the faculty members, one has won the title of "Guangxi Famous Teacher", and seven teachers won the "Baosteel Excellent Teachers Award". In 2021, the school was approved as one of the first modern industrial schools in Guangxi.

The school is equipped with a number of teaching and research platforms, including the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, the National Engineering Education Practice Center, the Provincial and Ministerial Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center, the Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, Guangxi Key Laboratory of Manufacturing System and Advanced Manufacturing Technology, the Innovation Platform of Subtropical Agricultural Intelligent Equipment, and the Engineering Training Center. Moreover, Mechanical Engineering is honored as a key discipline with advantages and characteristics in Guangxi. The school now has 6187 sets of advanced instruments and equipment, such as flexible manufacturing system, five-axis CNC machining center, ultra-fast laser machining system, ultra-high precision 3D printing system and robot system.

The school now has a total of 163 faculty members, of which 97 are full-time teachers, 18 are doctoral supervisors and 72 are with senior titles. Moreover, the school also has many high-level talents: foreign academicians from Russian Academy of Engineering, National High-level Overseas Experts and Talents, scholars of the Hundred Talents Program exercised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, recipients of the special government allowance from the State Council, Bagui scholars, Outstanding Experts of Guangxi, candidates for Talents Project of Guangxi, Famous Teachers of Guangxi, Excellent Teachers of Guangxi, Baosteel Excellent Teachers Award, winners of the Guangxi Outstanding Youth Fund, candidates for the Young Talents Promotion Project carried out by China Association for Science and Technology, candidates for the Hundred Talents Plan of universities in Guangxi, etc. The school has also formed 15 research teams for New Energy Vehicle Transmission, Laser Intelligent Manufacturing and Precision Machining, Efficient, Clean and Low-carbon Utilization of Energy, Optimal Design of Complex Electromechanical Products, Intelligent Measurement and Control Technology Research, Large-scale Equipment Fault Diagnosis, Intelligent Operation and Maintenance, Intelligent Manufacturing, Subtropical Intelligent Agricultural Machinery, and Micro Nano Electromechanical System, etc.

The school has established certain advantageous disciplinary directions in the fields of Complex Equipment Design and Fault Diagnosis, Intelligent Agricultural machinery, Environmental Protection Equipment, Precision Manufacturing, Engine Design, etc., serving Southwest China and extending its influence to ASEAN. Through comprehensive and in-depth cooperation with enterprises, the school has provided a number of domestic leading enterprises such as Yuchai, Liugong, Liuzhou Motor, Liuzhou Steel, Nanning Sugar with key technologies and talents in the long term, such as sucrose machinery and equipment, intelligent agricultural machinery for hills and engine design, so as to realize the "double transformation", which means scientific and technological achievements could be transformed to both serving the society and teaching. In the past five years, the school has hosted 33 national and more than 150 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, including the key projects of Regional Innovation Joint Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation and the key projects of Strategic Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation in National Key R&D Program of China, with a research fund of more than 100 million yuan. The school has won more than 20 awards above the autonomous region level, including the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Award, the second prize of China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award, and the special prize of Guangxi Teaching Achievements. Faculty members in the school has published 1147 high-level papers, including 7 ESI highly cited papers, 377 SCI Zone 1 papers, and 344 invention patents authorized, ranking among the top in achievement transformation.

Aiming at the needs of academic frontier and regional development, the school has been always cultivating scientific research talents with solid theoretical foundation, outstanding innovation awareness, and ability to discover and solve key scientific problems in engineering, with a particular focus on cultivating the scientific and technological innovation ability of college students, with significant results. Over the past ten years, more than 1,000 students have won honors and awards at or above the autonomous region level, with more than 100 national disciplinary competitions including 16 national first prizes. These awards includes the first prize of the “Challenge Cup” National Competition for Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works by Race, the silver award of the National “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students, the first prize of National College Students’ Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, the bronze award of "Challenge Cup" National College Student Business Plan Competition, the special prize of China Agricultural Robot Competition and many other competition awards. Moreover, three undergraduate students of the school have won the highest award of science and technology innovation for college students -- China Youth Science and Technology Award. Since its establishment, the school has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates for national construction and industrial development. Most of them have grown into industry experts, government officials, enterprise leaders, technical backbone or private entrepreneurs, such as Li Lin and Wen Shengchang, both academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wei Naiwen, chief engineer of China Subsurface Ballistic Missile Underwater Launcher, Yu Kejin, co-founder of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Yang Jichang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Feng Henggao, vice Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Lin Guoqiang, vice chairman of CPPCC in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; Zhu Feng, secretary of the party committee and chairman of SINOMACH Precision Industry Co., LTD, Long Yue, one of the main builders of China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), Shen Jie, the former chief engineer of Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., LTD, Zhong Jingwei, general manager of Shenzhen Emdoor Holdings Co., LTD., and Huang Huajie, chairman of Jinfeng Technology Co., LTD in Shenzhen, etc.

The school has always focused on social services, and strives to provide intellectual and talents for local economic and social development. By actively carrying out school-enterprise cooperation, the school has realized the integration of school and enterprise, as well as integration of teaching and engineering. The school has built more than 30 bases for industry, university and research institution, 5 large-scale engineering practice education centers and 2 "schools-in-factory" and "factories-in-school" with well-known enterprises such as Liugong and Yuchai Machinery Co., LTD. Among them, the engineering practice base, jointly built by School of Mechanical Engineering, Guangxi University and Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd., was awarded "National Engineering Practice Education Center".

At present, the School of Mechanical Engineering still adheres to the motto "keep diligent and sincere, learn new and accumulate more" of the school and the motto of "Diligence, honesty, learning and innovation" of Guangxi University. Based in Guangxi and extending its influence to the whole nation and even ASEAN, focusing on students, the school actively adapts to the national innovation-driven strategy, strives to create "first-class discipline" and "first-class major", serving high-quality development of Guangxi mechanical industry. It will make great contribution to building a magnificent Guangxi and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
