School of Public Policy and Management of Guangxi University was built in September 2005, formerly the School of Social Sciences and Management of Guangxi University. The school originally offered one undergraduate program (Philosophy) in 1977, and later two programs for junior college students (Administration and Public Relations). In 1999, the major of Tourism Management (including Public Service Administration) was established, and then in 2002, the major of Public Service Administration became an independent program. In 2005, the major of Tourism Management came under the School of Business. In 2006, a new undergraduate program of social work was established. In May 2017, the Department of Philosophy of our School merged into the School of Marxism. In July 2017, as the School of Education was dissolved, some teachers of that School were transferred to our school.

At present, the school administrates the Department of Public Administration and the MPA Education Center. Besides, it has built many institutions, including the Research Center of Land Resources Management and Public Policy of Guangxi University, the Research Center of Social Survey of Guangxi University, and the Institute of Human Resources Research of Public Organizations of Guangxi University. The school offers first-level doctoral and master's degree programs of Public Management and professional master's degree program of MPA. Under the first-level doctoral program of Public Administration, we set five research fields: Administration, Public Policy, Public Organization and Social Governance, Land Resource Management and Frontier Governance. Public Administration is a key subject of Guangxi and a key field of “211 Project” and "Midwest Universities Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project" of Guangxi University. We have built the Research Center for Regional Social Management Innovation (key research base in Guangxi), ASEAN Research Center for Social Organization and Public Administration, and the Teaching Laboratory of Public Administration of Guangxi Demonstration Center for Experimental Education. The major of Public Service Administration, a distinctive discipline of Guangxi Universities, is selected as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate major construction sites.

The school now has 57 faculty members, including 43 full-time teachers, among which 37 teachers hold a doctoral degree. There are 15 professors (34.8%), 15 associate professors (34.8%) and 13 lecturers (30.2%). Furthermore, the school has 7 doctoral supervisors and 37 master's supervisor. In our school, 9 members have overseas study experience, one is appointed as distinguished professor of Changjiang Scholar Program by the Ministry of Education, and 2 are appointed as Guangxi Distinguished Scholars. At present, there are 1462 students in the school, including 679 undergraduate students and 743 postgraduate students (including 222 full-time masters of science, 88 full-time MBA students and 393 part-time MPA students), and 40 doctoral students, cultivating a large amount of high-quality, well-round and competitive personnel for society. Over the past five years, our faculty members have undertaken 20 national-level projects subsidized by National Social Science Fund and the National Natural Science Fund, including 2 key projects, 33 provincial and ministerial projects, and 121 other projects. We have published 31 academic works, 891 papers including 35 papers in SSCI journals and 154 in CSSCI journals. Besides, 196 papers have been published in Chinese core journals, many papers published in authoritative journals such as Management World, Chinese Public Administration, Sociological Study, and China Rural Survey. Over 30 papers were reposted by Xinhua Digest, China Social Science Digest and China Social Science Excellence. In addition, we have won more than 30 scientific research awards such as provincial and ministerial scientific achievement awards. Professor Long Hualou was selected as one of the Most Cited Chinese Scholars in Elsevier for 7 consecutive years and one global most cited Chinese scientist in Clarivatea for 4 consecutive years. The rapid development of scientific research has greatly promoted the construction and discipline progress of Public Administration in Guangxi University. In 2021 Best Chinese Universities Ranking, the discipline of Public Administration of our school ranked top 21%, and the major of Public Service Administration got A that year. Three courses (including Human Resource Development and Management and Public Policy) have been listed into the first-class courses of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the course, Social Research Methods, is selected as demonstration course on ideology and politics of Guangxi.

Backed by the resources from Guangxi University, the School has developed an advantageous and distinctive teaching and research system with regional characteristics. With the improving students’ quality and education scale, our school has won a higher social status and been providing better services to social and public sectors. All these efforts are to promote the economic development of Guangxi and the whole country and to build Guangxi University into a high-level research university with regional characteristics. Forging ahead, our school will take full use of our advantages for building a “Double First-Class” university and improving our competence!
