Embracing Challenge and Seeking Excellence, Striving to Brighten the Colors of Youth - GXU 2024 Freshman Orientation Ceremony

On September 2nd, a grand orientation ceremony was held for the 2024 freshman class, with 11,976 students at the West Campus Athletic Field. The event was attended by leaders including Li Jibing, Communist Party of China (CPC) Building Liaison Officer of the Chinese Ministry of Education, Li Guozhong, Secretary of the CPC GXU Committee, Han Linhai, Deputy Secretary of the CPC GXU Committee and President of GXU, Zheng Jielian, Academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Wang Shuangfei, Academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at the School of Light Industry and Food Engineering, and other distinguished guests. The ceremony was presided over by the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, Feng Jiaxun.

 

 

President Han Linhai delivered a speech titled "Embracing Challenge and Seeking Excellence - Striving to Brighten the Colors of Youth". He welcomed and congratulated the new students on their joining of the university family, while expressing his respect and gratitude to the parents and teachers who nurtured them. He introduced the 90-year history of Guangxi University, and revisited the founding principles of the first president, Ma Junwu: "Defending China, Developing Guangxi". President Han discussed the profound connotations and far-reaching significance of the school motto "Diligence and Sincerity". President Han emphasized that this generation came of age in a prosperous era, thereby it is high time for hard work. As university life is a critical period for students' growth, he expressed hope that students seize opportunities for success, endeavor to brighten the colors of youth, and commence a brilliant academic career at Guangxi University. He encouraged students to commit to serving China, become visionaries who reach for the stars, receive the baton of the times, and establish wholesome ideals and beliefs. He urged students to keep the interests of China in mind, through closely integrating their personal aspirations with the future of the motherland, and strive to become a new generation who can shoulder the great responsibility of national rejuvenation. President Han also encouraged students to hone their skills, be people of action, and overcome difficulties and challenges on the road of learning, while upholding a spirit of seeking truth and practicality, the pursuit of excellence, and humbleness. Thereby individuals can paint a wonderful life for themselves. President Han called on students to actively respond to the challenges of the times, become pioneering figures of innovation, stimulate their enthusiasm and potential for creativity, as well as using their youth and wisdom to promote social progress for a better future.

 

On behalf of the teachers, Li Jinghua, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School and Professor from the School of Electrical Engineering, shared her experiences and insights about the path of scientific research. Her theme was "Inheritance and Innovation is a Dual Drive by which We Jointly Create the Future ". She hoped that students would learn to discover and feel, absorb knowledge and transform it, in order to inherit and innovate the spirit of the university. She urged students to be ambitious, diligent in learning, and to become well-rounded. She encouraged them to experience every class, exchange, and activity with their hearts, and absorb the wisdom from Guangxi University into their own knowledge reserves and capabilities. She urged them to be brave in breaking through conventions, use their platforms and opportunities effectively, such as scientific research projects, integration projects of science and education, and collaborations between production and education institutions. Professor Li encouraged students to transform the knowledge and skills they learn into actions so they can promote social progress and contribute to society.

 

The 2024-batch freshman representative, Chen Mengke is an undergraduate majoring in Marine Science from the School of Marine Science. She expressed the aspirations of Guangxi University students: We will carry on the spirit of Guangxi University, inherit its torch, unite and strive for innovation; We will serve the "great national matters", and intentionally take on our due responsibility. Ren Denghui, a 2022-batch doctoral candidate from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, shared his growth experiences and insights. He emphasized the courage to withstand multifold challenges and setbacks, cultivation of learning and thinking habits, along with the personal concern of national and global affairs.

 

 

 

 

Leaders and academicians seated in the first row of the stage presented the 2024 freshman representatives with school emblems. Also attending the ceremony were Jin Shunan, Deputy Secretary of the CPC GXU Committee, Head of the GXU Group for Discipline Inspection and Supervision established by the Guangxi Commission for Discipline Inspection and Commission of Supervision, Secretary of the GXU Commission for Discipline Inspection, as well as Vice Presidents Ning Xuchu, Feng Jiaxun, Xia Guoen, Xiao Jianzhuang, and Liang Enwei. The leaders of discipline groups, well-known experts and professors, deans of various colleges and department heads attended as well.
